Mt Mooney Principals Quentin & Renee Mooney are a dedicated couple focused on providing their customers cattle that they would be happy to use. With this in mind their values of honesty and integrity are of course the basis for how do they do business providing clients with the knowledge that the Mt Mooney bulls offered are only those that Quentin & Renee would be willing to use themselves.

Quentin brings to the mix a dairy background and that innate knowledge that only comes from being brought up on the land. The need for great structure extends obviously to their focus also on their female lines with reproduction & udder quality being paramount. Quentin also is very genetically focused, to ensure that their herd is continually pushing the boundaries. Research into pedigrees and performance drives Quentin to source genetics to add to their own herd which will assist them in pushing the envelope to further assist their own clients in the future.

Renee, a resilient and smart business woman in her own right with the work ethic that can only come from having experience in her earlier years as a track rider, brings a passion for genetics and assurance of producing cattle with temperaments suitable for anyone to handle. Renee has the Queensland connection with many of her previous years being spent in the Charleville district which has provided her with the knowledge of what bulls need to have to survive in some of the more challenging environments.

They breed functional, tough cattle bred in a region where feet and leg structure are imperative to the longevity of their animals.

Renee & Quentin's sons Callum & Liam are also actively involved in the Mt Mooney operation where in addition to the stud enterprise the Mooney's run in excess of 200 commercial breeders in the upper south east of South Australia.

With the bulk of the progeny finding their way to the vealer trade, carcase attributes make up the other areas of their overall goals in producing bulls that will suit their client's needs.

Mount Mooneys focus is to breed Simmentals for our own use, both commercially and for the stud with the goal of continually improving our herd. Our genetic decisions focus on the following traits:

  • Calving ease.  Nobody wants losses out in the paddock. The jobs tough enough without making it unnecessarily harder and lost calves means lost profit.

  • Good Temperament. It’s essential to be able to work relaxed in the yards both for farmer and animal.

  • Structurally sound. Necessary to ensure the longevity of the bull and its ability to handle a high workload. This attribute has the added benefit in the performance  of progeny by continually improving and building a strong female base.

  • Higher carcass yield. The wholesale buyers and butchers want value for money! Our own vealers consistently yield greater than 55%, maintaining the customer base.

  • Feed efficiency. The easy doing cattle are easier to pick out during the tough times. They then also stack it on, putting it into their calves during the good times.
